Authorities say a Tioga County resident died after she fell down a flight of stairs at her home.

According to New York State Police, troopers were sent to a home on Valley View Drive in the town of Owego shortly before 6 p.m. May 24 to investigate a report of an unresponsive woman.

Police said lifesaving measures were performed on 55-year-old Rossilene Thomas but they were not successful.

An investigation determined Thomas had fallen down the stairs. An autopsy performed at Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton revealed the woman had sustained injuries that were consistent with such a fall.

According to a published obituary, Thomas had been born in Brazil. She worked as an educator in Broome County school districts and was director of religious education for Vestal United Methodist Church.

The obituary indicated the family planned to hold a memorial service in Brazil and a private memorial service locally for the those who knew Thomas.
