Investigators have determined that the 61-year-old man pulled out of a burning building on Binghamton's South Side was dead before the blaze broke out.

The fire at 14 McNamara Avenue was reported around 6 p.m. Monday.

When firefighters arrived, heavy smoke was coming from the two-and-a-half story single-family house. After they forced their way into the home through a rear door, they found a man.

Efforts to resuscitate the man were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City.

Detective Lieutenant Robert Fimbres said the man's death was attributed to medical issues and was not related to the fire.

The man, who lived alone, may have been dead for hours before the fire started. Investigators believe the blaze was electrical in nature.
