Pedestrian Signals Awaiting Activation Near Apalachin School

More than two months after installation work began, new pedestrian crossing signals near a Vestal School District elementary school are not operational.

The signals are located along Route 434 in the Town of Owego, a short distance from the Tioga Hills Elementary School.

Crews from Binghamton Road Electric started work at the Glann Road and Griffin Drive intersections in late August. New pedestrian signals were installed earlier in the summer at other Apalachin intersections.

New crosswalk striping and lane markings were completed at the intersections near the school last months. The crosswalk signal controls and display lights remain covered.

It's not known when the signals will go into operation. A statement from the New York State Department of Transportation said they "will be worked on as soon as possible."

According to the statement, the signals must be programmed to ensure proper synchronization so "there are no conflicts between vehicles and pedestrians."

The DOT statement said the upgrades near the school were installed as part of an "overall pedestrian enhancement effort."
