Part of Route 17 Dedicated to Fallen D.O.T. Worker Matt Howe
A portion of highway in the Southern Tier is dedicated to a New York State Department of Transportation worker who died after his D.O.T. vehicle was hit by a truck as he was working along the side of the road.
A section of Route 17 between Exit 63 in Lounsberry and Exit 62 in Nichols is being designated the Dennis “Matt” Howe Memorial Highway.
Howe was part of a road crew performing highway safety work in that portion of the Southern Tier Expressway March 13 when the D.O.T. truck was hit by a tractor trailer and the 45-year-old Candor man sustained fatal injuries. The father of two died March 18 at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre.
37-year-old tractor trailer driver, Lawrence Faucett of Ulster, Pennsylvania was accused of violating New York’s Move Over Law and was ticketed for moving from a lane unsafely.
In August, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed legislation dedicating the portion of highway in memory of Howe.
