Supporters of a dog park in the town of Owego say construction on the facility could get underway soon.

The town board is giving the Owego Dog Owners Group tentative approval to develop the park as soon as the organization meets a few additional requirements.

The canine recreational facility would be built on the north side of Hickories Park, off Route 17C. The site is near the Lockheed Martin plant.

Group treasurer Wendy Post says she's "very happy" with the town board's action because it clears the way for the finalization of the design plans.

The project is being financed through a donation by businessman Adam Weitsman.

Post says she hopes work on the site will start within the next few weeks. If things go smoothly, she says the dog park could be open by next May.
