Construction is nearing completion on a 62-unit apartment project in Tioga County.

The $12.5 million Owego Gardens complex is being built on the South Side of the Village of Owego.

State financial support was provided for the apartment project as part of the regional recovery program following the flood of September 2011.

Melissa Coolbaugh of Owego Gardens said applicants who were displaced by the flooding receive a preference in being considered for an apartment.

Coolbaugh said the complex includes some one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments. The apartment project is designed for residents 55 years of age and older.

Coolbaugh said nearly 300 people have expressed an interest in leasing an apartment. The names of those who applied between July and October were placed in a pool and selected at random. Veterans and those displaced by flooding were put at the top of the list.

The complex is expected to open in January.
