Schools were forced to go to remote learning during the pandemic and concerns remain about the safety of in-person learning with COVID-19 vaccines not yet available to children under the age of 12 and the spread of the delta variant. Now, the school district in Tioga County says it is offering the virtual school courses as an alternative to the traditional in-person school experience.

OA students have to voluntarily enroll in the program and would commit to one semester at a time. College courses are also being made available.

In a news release from the district, OA officials say students would follow a full, five-day a week schedule taught by Owego Apalachin teachers.  Students can participate in all extra-curricular activities offered in the district, including sports, musicals and clubs. There is no additional cost for Owego Apalachin district residents and a one-thousand dollar a year cost for non-district residents.  District resources like counselors, social workers and coaches are available to the students.

Officials say there will be guidelines and requirements for programs focusing on attendance, participation and overall success.

The OA virtual enrollment form can be found here.
