Binghamton is a hockey town—everyone knows that. Just look at our pride in our local hockey teams and the Binghamton Black Bears professional hockey club.

Hockey has been a big part of our community for decades and continues to be strong. Attend a high school or Black Bears game and you'll see first-hand how exciting the sport can be.

Speaking of hockey and the Binghamton Black Bears, the Binghamton Hockey Hall of Fame Class of 2025 has been announced.

The Black Bears and Binghamton HOF are inducting former players Binghamton Senator Jason Spezza, B.C. Icemen, Dieter Kochan, and late cartoonist Johnny Hart. The induction will be held on April 11, 2025.

The Hall of Fame ceremony will take place just before the Friday, April 11th Binghamton Black Bears game at the Visions Veterans Memorial Arena. The Black Bears will be honoring the history of Binghamton hockey with special throwback jerseys that will be announced at a later date.

According to the Binghamton HOF committee, Jason Spezza played 19 seasons in the NHL with the Ottawa Senators, Dallas Stars, and Toronto Maple Leafs. He now works as assistant general manager of the Pittsburgh Penguins and is in his second season of overseeing the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins.

Dieter Kochan played for the B.C. Icemen from 1998-2000. He was selected 98th overall in the 1993 NHL Draft by the Vancouver Canucks. Kochan was called many times to play in the NHL, earning a spot with the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 1999 season, and was the first and only player ever to move from the UHL straight to the NHL.

Johnny Hart was a native of Endicott, most known for the creation of the comic strips B.C. and Wizard of Id. He is credited with the original designs of two of the Binghamton hockey logos, the Broome Dusters and B.C. Icemen along with other notable logs around Broome County Johnny passed away in 2007.

Although the full extent of damage caused by Hurricane Ian in the Southwest is still being realized, Ian is already being called one of the costliest storms to ever hit the U.S. Stacker took a look at NOAA data to extrapolate the costliest U.S. hurricanes of all time.

Stacker ranked the most expensive climate disasters by the billions since 1980 by the total cost of all damages, adjusted for inflation, based on 2021 data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The list starts with Hurricane Sally, which caused $7.3 billion in damages in 2020, and ends with a devastating 2005 hurricane that caused $170 billion in damage and killed at least 1,833 people.
