A national automotive parts retailer has chosen a site for its first location in the Binghamton market.

O'Reilly Auto Parts is preparing to develop a store on property on East Main Street between Garfield and Grant avenues.

Mark Merz, O'Reilly senior vice president of finance, on Monday confirmed the Missouri-based company is planning to open an Endicott store. He said the site could be in operation by the end of the year but no firm timetable has been established for the project.

Marchuska Brothers Construction acquired the property in December 2018 for $225,000. Trees were cleared from the site

At one point, the company was planning to develop an office complex on the site. That plan was abandoned after a proposed tax break package was rejected.

Merz said O'Reilly Auto Parts now operates nearly 6,000 stores. Most of them are in the United States, although the company now has 43 units in Mexico.

O'Reilly is expanding its presence in New York state and New England. Merz said the company is developing "multiple projects" in New York.

The Endicott site is located on a heavily-traveled section of East Main Street, just east of Washington Avenue and Union-Endicott High School.

Plans call for access to the new store to be from Garfield Avenue, on the west side of the property.
