Operation Hardhat Puts New York State Troopers in Road Works Zones
New York State Police are again set up in highway work zones looking for drivers violating any one of a number of laws that, among other things, protect construction crews.
During the detail, troopers don reflective vests and other protective gear alongside Department of Transportation road crews at various work zones all throughout New York State.
An Operation Hardhat zone on Route 17 west in Windsor July 14 netted over three dozen tickets ranging from speeding, illegally using a cell phone and failure to move over to seat belt and other violations.
The effort is intended to heighten awareness of the dangers facing crews working on the roads and to get motorists to slow down and concentrate when they approach and travel through the construction zones.
During last year’s Operation Hardhat enforcement, Troopers wrote over 1,000 tickets across the state including 493 for speeding, 92 for violating the cell phone law and 72 tickets for not moving over for construction or emergency vehicles.
