NYPD officials say an officer struggling with a Broome Coujnty resident died as a result of shots fired by fellow officers.

Police Commissioner James O'Neill said investigators determined Officer Brian Mulkeen was hit by friendly fire during Sunday morning's incident in the Bronx.

O'Neill said Mulkeen retained his weapon during the struggle with Antonio Williams. The commissioner said Mulkeen fired five shots at the Binghamton man.

Mulkeen's partners fired ten rounds, two of which struck him. O'Neill called it "a tragic case of friendly fire."

Police said Williams had a .32 caliber revolver when he was confronted by police. That gun was not fired during the struggle that developed after a foot pursuit.

Williams died shortly after he was shot by other officers.

Williams, who previously lived in Endicott, was on probation until 2022 in connection with a drug arrest in the village in March of last year.

Endicott police chief Patrick Garey said he could not recall any other incidents involving Williams.

Binghamton police chief Joseph Zikuski was not available to discuss his department's experience with Williams. He most recently was arrested by city police on a harassment with physical contact charge last month. He was due to appear in city court on October 4.
