What Exactly Is Going On at the Oakdale Commons?
While much of the construction work at the Oakdale Commons in Johnson City has been completed over the last couple of years, there's still a lot more to be done.
The owners of the former Oakdale Mall shopping center - Spark JC - have been modernizing the complex, which was mostly empty five years ago.
Several new businesses have opened on three sides of the sprawling Oakdale Commons property but the west side remains a work in progress.
Marc Newman, a member of the ownership team, said there have been some major infrastructure upgrades on the west side of the complex over the past few months.
A large drainage pipe has been installed and repaving operations now are underway.
Newman told WNBF News that work should be completed by Thanksgiving.
Demolition crews will be moving into the southeast corner of the Oakdale Commons property later this month to tear down the old Key Bank branch office, which closed late last month.
Plans call for the construction of a Chick-fil-A restaurant on the bank site. The new eatery is expected to open by the end of 2026.
Several businesses have launched operations at the Oakdale Commons over the last few years.
Dick's Housing of Sport, BJ's Wholesale Club and several food and entertainment venues have opened to revitalize what had been a dying mall.
A 125-apartment residential building and a 200-space child care facility are to be added at the site over the next couple of years.
