Pritchard said the development at Route 434 and South Washington Street will be known as Number 5 Commons.

The former fire station that has been home to the Number 5 restaurant for over 40 years would be retained, as would another nearby building on South Washington Street.

An existing house on Mary Street that has been used for offices would be removed.

During a public hearing, a woman who lives near the site expressed concern about the impact the project would have the the nearby residential neighborhood. But city councilman Joe Burns said he believes the development "would be very good" for the area.

Another South Side resident spoke against the project, expressing concerns environmental and traffic concerns. He noted the 156-page traffic impact study for the project wasn't made public until a few hours before the meeting.

The commission delayed action on the proposal.

Jim McCoy, who has been seeking a buyer for the Number 5 restaurant and the related properties, attended the commission meeting. The South Side properties have been on the market for more than two years.
