New York State Police Consider Charges in Shooting of Trooper in Colesville

New York State Police Investigators are going to be working for some time to determine what prompted a man to fire at law enforcement officers at around 8:36 p.m. June 9 on East Windsor Road near Thorn Hill and what charges may be filed.

34-year-old Jason Johnson was apprehended without further incident after hiding from authorities for about 20 hours overnight Wednesday and most of the day Thursday, June 10.  New York State Police say tips helped lead to their apprehending Johnson on the banks of the Susquehanna River near State Route 79 in Colesville at around 4:30 p.m. June 10.

There were no other injuries reported after Trooper Becky Seager was hit by gunfire during response to the initial complaint to check on the welfare of a person.

State police say after Johnson allegedly fired at New York State Police and Broome County Sheriff’s Deputies, law enforcement did exchange in gunfire with Johnson before he fled the scene.  Trooper Seager was rushed into a Sheriff’s office squad car then taken by ambulance to Wilson Hospital.

Seager, a seven-year veteran of the State Police force assigned to Binghamton, was released from Wilson Hospital Thursday afternoon to a gathering of fellow officers who went to the hospital to show their support.  She is expected to make a full recovery.

State Police issued a statement in the afternoon of June 10  thanking all the supporting agencies and the public who called with tips during the manhunt.

Residents in the Colesville, Harpursville, Windsor, Afton were, no doubt, breathing a little easier waking up on June 11 with the capture of the suspect in the June 9 shooting on Thursday afternoon.

June 10 was a harrowing day for residents and businesses in the communities in Northeastern Broome County near the scene of the shooting.

Residents locked their doors, sheds, garages, barns and vehicles and law enforcement set up a perimeter and a staging area at the Harpursville Fire Station.  Vehicles coming in and out of the area were checked by officers.

Schools in Windsor, Afton and Harpursville went to remote learning, Nathaniel Cole Park and the Eastern Broome Senior Center closed and Meals on Wheels deliveries were canceled while the manhunt was going on.

All facilities were expected to be back open and operating normally on June 11.
