Governor Andrew Cuomo has signed the measure raising the Empire State’s smoking age from 18 to 21.

The law takes effect in 120 days from July 16.

It applies to traditional cigarettes as well as electronic cigarettes and vaporizers.

The idea is to keep, in Cuomo’s words: an "entire generation" getting hooked.

Sixteen states have approved raising the smoking age to 21.

Several Downstate municipalities in New York and some counties had already raised their legal smoking age to 21.
