New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli says an audit examining seven school districts, including Horseheads in Chemung County and the Rome City School District in Oneida County found districts not confirming all bus drivers are completing required training and drug testing.

Horseheads met three of five requirements while Rome and Saratoga Springs didn’t meet any.

Other districts examined were the Clarence Central School District in Erie County, Cornwall Central Schools in Orange County, Saratoga Springs City School District, Watertown City School District and the West Irondequoit Central School District in Monroe County.

Auditors reviewed districts and their transportation vendors for compliance with driver random drug testing, completion of required safety training and annual approval by the superintendent, safety drills and bus inspection completion and reviews.

In a statement issued along with the audit information, DiNapoli said, “Failing to ensure that school bus drivers are properly trained and vetted and safety drills take place could endanger students.”
