David says dilapidated buildings reduce the value of nearby properties and adversely affect the quality of life of Binghamton residents.

Workers from All Around Excavating of Johnson City began tearing down an empty house at 111 Walnut Street on the West Side during the rain this morning.

Other buildings targeted in this wave of demolitions are at 488 and 490 Chenango Street on the North Side; 20 Lisle Avenue downtown; and 53 Mary Street on the South Side.

The work is expected to be finished in about three weeks. It's expected to cost about $204,000.

Most of the cost is being covered by money that was available from vacant personnel budget lines. Federal funds will be used to pay the balance of the new demolition price tag.
