Construction is underway on a long-awaited new lecture hall complex on the main Binghamton University campus in Vestal.

Work at the site east of Bunn Hill Road began several weeks ago.

The university received a state allocation of $60 million in 2022 for the design and construction of the new facility.

The new 50,000-square-foot academic building will include three lecture halls, three computer classrooms and a 100-seat "active learning" classroom.

The complex also will have 33 general purpose classrooms ranging in size from 20 to 75 seats. It will have several testing rooms and a commons area will group study rooms.

According to the university, the project will add a total of more than 1,900 seats to the Vestal campus.

Hueber-Breuer Construction Company of Syracuse is the general contractor for the job.

The new building will not replace Binghamton University's current lecture hall facility.

LOOK: Here are the biggest HBCUs in America

More than 100 historically Black colleges and universities are designated by the U.S. Department of Education, meeting the definition of a school "established prior to 1964, whose principal mission was, and is, the education of black Americans."

StudySoup compiled the 20 largest historically Black colleges and universities in the nation, based on 2021 data from the U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics. Each HBCU on this list is a four-year institution, and the schools are ranked by the total student enrollment.
