New COVID Cases Drop to Single Digits in Southern Tier

Less than a month ago, Broome County was reporting daily new COVID-19 cases in the double digits, now the county and many surrounding areas are reporting new cases at zero or in the single digits.

Broome County closed its mass vaccination site at SUNY Broome this week and New York State is gradually decommissioning several drive-in testing locations, many of those downstate.

Still, officials are struggling to reach at least 70 percent of the population to be vaccinated in order to achieve general immunity against the deadly virus.

New York is still operating the mass vaccination site locally at the former Gannett printing facility, now a Binghamton University document storage site next to the Johnson City Walmart store.  Anyone age 12 and up can make an appointment or walk in to receive the vaccine.

A number of community clinics continue to be held.  In Broome County June 12 residents can get the single dose Johnson and Johnson vaccine at the Windsor Fire Department from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m..  Another Johnson and Johnson clinic will be held next Thursday, June 17 at the Taste of New York Building at Cornell Cooperative Extension on Upper Front Street in the Town of Dickinson from 4 to 6 p.m.  Go to www.gobroomecounty.com to make an appointment.

In Chenango County, residents can get a side of chicken with their shot as there will be a walk-in vaccination clinic at the Norwich firehouse from 1 to 3 p.m. June 12 during the fire department’s chicken barbecue.
