New Binghamton Fire Department Headquarters Expected to Open Soon
The city of Binghamton's newly-constructed Court Street fire station should be operational before spring.
Fire trucks and other department vehicles were observed at the facility this week as the 20,000-square-foot structure is being prepared for use. City firefighters were getting acclimated to how things will work in their future home.
The $8.5 million fire station is located at Court and Chapman streets, just southeast of the city-owned Mirabito Stadium.
The department moved out of its quarters at City Hall in 2020 because of concerns that the deteriorating garage floor could collapse under the heavy weight of the firetrucks. The temporary fire headquarters operation has been housed in a former car dealership at Court and Carroll streets.
The new fire station has five drive-through bays and a bunk area for 11 firefighters. The facility also has a kitchen, dining area and decontamination room to prevent toxins from spreading throughout the station.
City firefighters who have visited the new complex have indicated they're impressed with the facility.
Binghamton Mayor Jared Kraham and fire chief Alan Gardiner were not available Thursday to discuss an official target date for opening the new station.
