Specialized sorting and materials handling equipment is being installed in preparation for the start of operations at a newly-constructed recycling facility in Tioga County.

The $6 million complex is being built at the site of a town of Owego plant that was destroyed by fire in January 2020.

Southern Tier Recycling - a unit of Taylor Garbage Service - had announced plans to rebuild shortly after the blaze at the 30,000-square-foot facility.

The company's Jared Taylor said equipment installation is being completed in the new structure off Route 434 in Apalachin.

Taylor said the goal is to have the plant "up and running by March 1."

The original recycling facility at the site had been in operation since September 2012.
