A new surface parking lot at the site of the old city-owned Collier Street garage could open next month.

The crumbling parking ramp was closed on November 9 because of safety concerns.

The $484,000 demolition project at the site has been completed by Gorick Construction. About 9,000 cubic yards of crushed stone and other material was used to fill the hole where the garage once stood.

Deputy Mayor Jared Kraham said paving for the parking lot should get underway "very shortly." He said that work will be done under a contract that is separate from the garage demolition project.

Kraham said the parking lot work will be performed by G DeVincentis and Son of Binghamton.

The new lot is to be made available for public parking. It's expected to have about 75 spaces. City officials said the old garage had 534 parking spaces.
