A Nichols man is safe after wandering away from home in the afternoon of October 17.

New York State Police say 77 year old Edward Mills, who suffers from dementia, left his home on West River Road and family members tried unsuccessfully to find him.

Troopers say they were concerned for the man’s safety as heavy, steady rain was in the area for several hours after Mills walked off.

He was finally found at 7:15 the next morning by a Tioga Downs security officer, sitting in a swampy area in tall grass, not far from his home.

State Police say Mills was cold, weak, wet and disoriented. He was taken to Robert Packer hospital for treatment.
