66-Year-Old Man Dies After Being Shot by Walton Police Officer
Authorities say a Walton man was pronounced dead shortly after he was wounded by a police officer in Delaware County.
According to New York State Police, a Walton village police officer was sent to a Griswold Street home around 3:30 a.m. Monday.
The news release indicates the officer made contact with a man who was inside the residence.
Police said while the man "pointed what was believed to be a gun at the officer."
The police officer then is said to have retreated. According to the news released, "the man followed, ignoring multiple commands to drop his weapon."
The man is said to have pointed the "suspected gun" at the officer. The officer then shot the man.
State police late Monday released the man's name. They said 66-year-old Paul Weeden was pronounced dead at the scene.
State police and the attorney general's office are investigating the shooting.
Walton police chief Joseph D’Addezio could not be reached for comment early Monday afternoon.
