Man Barricades Himself Inside Johnson City Apartment House
A Johnson City neighborhood is back to normal after police sealed off a section of a Johnson City a residential street during a lengthy standoff with a despondent man.
The man barricaded himself inside a three-family apartment house at 74 Endicott Avenue.
The incident apparently started around 2 p.m. Tuesday as a domestic dispute involving the man's girlfriend.
Neighbors said they believed the man had recently been released from prison. He was said to have been seen holding a knife, indicating he wanted to harm himself.
Johnson City police closed Endicott Avenue between Willow Street to east of Johnson Street.
The Metro SWAT team with members from several Broome County law enforcement agencies responded to the scene.
NYSEG workers shut off utility service to the house. Medics from the Union Volunteer Emergency Squad and Johnson City firefighters were called to stand by at the scene in the event they were needed.
Negotiators were communicating with the man to encourage him to surrender.
Johnson City Police on May 26 said the stand-off lasted around seven-and-a-half hours before the man surrendered. There were no injuries reported.
The man's name had not been released as of Wednesday morning.
