Company and restaurant industry sources say several hundred people are losing their jobs with Conklin-based Maines Paper and Food Service.

A Maines representative Monday told WNBF News the company doesn't release information because it is privately owned. He declined to answer any questions regarding the status of Maines operations.

More than 300 Maines Paper and Food Service employees had been furloughed in March.

In recent days, local restaurant operators who depended on Maines as a primary supplier began to hear word of a possible sale or bankruptcy filing involving the company.

Maines opened a 340,000-square-foot distribution center in Broome County in 1998 after receiving nearly $2 million in incentives to prevent the company from moving to Pennsylvania.

According to its website, Maines now is the largest food distributor serving Burger King restaurants.

The history section of the website concludes: "With the synergy created between the Maines family's entrepreneurial spirit, the world-class facilities, and hard-working employees, the future looks bright for Maines and its customers."
