EARLIER STORY:
One person is dead and another is hospitalized with serious injuries following a shooting incident at a town of Conklin residence.
Broome County sheriff's deputies and state troopers were sent to a single-family home at 58 Leslie Avenue around 10:40 a.m. Friday.
Police sealed off a section of Leslie Avenue between Inamour Drive and Suncrest Drive. The house where the shootings occurred is in a neighborhood a few blocks south of Susquehanna Valley High School.
Sheriff Fred Akshar told reporters near the scene that a suspect was in custody. He said "it was an incredibly hectic situation for a brief period of time" after police arrived.
Akshar initially said "several victims" had been taken to the hospital for treatment but a sheriff's office news release issued in the afternoon reported one person had died and another had been hospitalized. The weapon involved in the incident was a handgun.
Authorities did not immediately identify the suspect or the person who was transported to Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City.
The sheriff said law enforcement authorities quickly contacted the Susquehanna Valley School District. A shelter-in-place directive was issued for the immediate neighborhood until the shooting scene was secured.
