A long-awaited senior wellness center in downtown Johnson City is expected to be operational soon.

Lourdes Hospital will operate the facility on Jenison Avenue as part of a collaborative arrangement with Binghamton University.

Construction of a pre-engineered building near other components of the university's Health Science Campus was completed recently.

The site for the project was acquired by the Binghamton University Foundation for $350,000 in 2015. When plans for the wellness center were announced four years later, the facility was expected to open in the fall of 2020.

On Thursday, a Lourdes spokesperson said the center now is expected to open in early to mid July. An open house will be scheduled to allow people to learn about the services that will be provided at the site, which is just east of the Decker College of Nursing building.

An old house and a medical complex had been located on the Jenison Avenue site. They were torn down in July 2019.

University representatives have not said how much the new project cost but a building permit on the site indicates a value of $2.9 million.

Ratings are based on six categories: affordability, weather, safety, economy, education and health, and quality of life. The cities ranged in population from 10,000 to 150,000, but they had to have at least one local beach listed on TripAdvisor. Read the full methodology here. From those rankings, we selected the top 50. Readers who live in California and Florida will be unsurprised to learn that many of towns featured here are in one of those two states.
