Cornell Suspect Held At Broome County Jail

A 21-year-old Cornell University junior accused of threatening Jewish students at the school was being held at Broome County Jail in the town of Dickinson. Patrick Dai of Pittsford was arrested Tuesday (October 31) in connection with threats posted in the Cornell section of an online discussion site. Broome County Sheriff Fred Akshar said Dai was being housed in the medical wing of the jail on Front Street, just north of Binghamton.
Food-A-Bago Food Drive Returned

Our annual Food-A-Bago food drive for Broome County CHOW returned on October 30th. This was our 23rd year collecting food and monetary donations to help families in the Southern Tier. Townsquare radio personalities were stationed at the Weis Food Market on 1290 Upper Front Street Binghamton accepting non-perishable food and monetary donations to help local families in our community.
Binghamton Blighted Buildings To Meet The Wrecking Crew

Roving wrecking crews are preparing to remove several structures in a few Binghamton neighborhoods. Gorick Construction will be paid $186,000 to take down seven blighted buildings on the city's latest hit list of dilapidated sites. Firearms and Narcotics Seized In Binghamton

Three search warrants were executed recently by the members of the Broome County Special Investigations Unit Task Force and Metro SWAT Teams, The first of three search warrants was executed on October 26th, 2023 in Binghamton. According to the Task Force, as a result of the search warrant at 10 Holland Street, Binghamton, Apartment 1, several items were located.
Binghamton Floodwall Repairs Underway

A multi-year project to repair three sections of an 80-year-old floodwall in the city of Binghamton is underway. Construction crews have been at work on a crumbling portion of the protective wall along the Susquehanna River. The first phase of the project is occurring along Court Street east of Tompkins Street and Brandywine Avenue. One eastbound traffic lane is closed while the work is underway.
Air Quality Sensors To Be Installed In NYS Counties That Have None

These sensors allow state and federal agencies to observe smoke plumes in real time, collect data, and issue precise, timely alerts to the public. Local counties having new sensors installed that currently have none, include Chemung, Chenango, Delaware, and Schuyler.
Binghamton's Red Oak Diner To Reopen

The Red Oak Restaurant on Front Street in Binghamton - which closed three years ago - is expected to make a comeback. The iconic diner had been operated by Julianne Ludka and Michael Kapogiannatos for about 35 years. The Red Oak served its last customers in October 2020 after the partners decided to retire. Kapogiannatos died the following July.
Motor Vehicle Crash Results In One Death

On October 30, Broome County Sheriff's Office patrols responded to a motor vehicle accident that claimed the life of a teenager in the Town of Colesville. Two passengers were treated at a local hospital for minor injuries. The driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two Local Sports Icons Pass Away

Former professional baseball players and members of the Greater Binghamton Sports Hall of Fame Rob Garner and Lou Howell have passed away. Garner passed away on October 21st, He pitched for five major league teams. Howell passed away on October 26th. He was a catcher for the Binghamton Triplets, a fifth-round draft pick with the New York Yankees, and a long-time area teacher, athletic director, and coach.
