Broome County Man Drove Truck Over Car with Passengers Inside

A driver faces several felony charges after a pickup truck slammed into an occupied car and then drove over the vehicle in Broome County. Authorities said 35-year-old Travis Ross of Whitney Point was arrested after the incident early Tuesday morning. According to the Broome County Sheriff's Office, deputies were sent to Prospect Street in the village of Whitney Point around 1:30 a.m. to investigate a crash involving two vehicles. When they arrived at the scene, deputies discovered Ross in the driver's seat of a 1998 GMC pickup truck that was parked on top of a Mitsubishi Eclipse.
Upgrades At 26 New York Airports Including The Southern Tier

On September 4, 2024, $59,115,204 in federal funding to modernize facilities and strengthen airfield safety across New York State was announced by U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer along with U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand. Several New York State airports will share the federal funding, granted through the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Improvement Program. The aim is to help fund projects that address safety, capacity, and security at 26 airports throughout New York State.
West Corners Man Stabbed in Labor Day Laundry Dispute

A laundry room argument in a town of Union apartment complex ended with one resident stabbing a neighbor in the chest. Two witnesses to the attack at the Bornt Hill Apartments in West Corners rushed to provide assistance to the injured man. Broome County sheriff's deputies also aided the victim by applying direct pressure and using a chest seal until medics arrived at the scene. Authorities said the Labor Day assault occurred shortly after 6 p.m. in the laundry room of the 30-unit apartment complex off Route 17C. The stabbing victim - whose name was not released - was lying on the ground of a parking lot when sheriff's deputies arrived. He was taken to Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City, where he was reported in serious condition after undergoing surgery.
New York Retail Worker Safety Act Signed: What It Means

September 4th, 2024, the Retail Worker Safety Act S. 8358B/A. 8947C was signed into law in New York State by Governor Kathy Hochul. According to the Retail, Wholesale, and Department Store Union, this new law will require corporate retail employers to adopt a violence prevention plan and train workers in de-escalation and active shooters. For large employers, panic buttons will be required to be in place throughout the workplace. The Union notes that retail violence is a growing workplace issue that the administration put front and center in this legislative session.
3 Hurt When BC Transit Bus Strikes Pole at Oakdale Commons in JC

Three people were taken to the hospital after a BC Transit bus crashed into a light pole on the west side of the Oakdale Commons complex in Johnson City. The incident happened shortly after 8:30 a.m. Friday near the former Burlington Coat Factory store. The 38-seat bus apparently had been traveling northbound in the mall parking lot in a lane next to the building. The hybrid electric vehicle smashed into a pole approaching a curve. Johnson City police were assisted at the scene by village firefighters and a BC Transit safety worker. Two Union Volunteer Emergency Squad ambulances were dispatched to evaluate those who were on the bus.
13 of the Biggest Food Recalls for New York This August

Taking a look at the U.S. Food & Drug Administration website as of this article, There were 26 recalls in the month of August alone. The latest recall came out on August 30th for Asli Fine Foods for the 7-ounce Asli Cinnamon Powder due to a possible health risk. The reason for the recall is because the product may contain lead. The product was sold in stores in the states of Minnesota, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, and Ohio. One day earlier, M&P Food Production of Brooklyn, New York recalled multiple flavors of blintzes, pirozhki, and vareniki. the reason is that the product may contain undeclared wheat, milk, and/or sesame which is not good for those who have those types of allergies or severe sensitivity. This product was sold in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Maryland and Florida.
"Hot Chicken" Expected to Replace Blaze Pizza in Vestal

A Vestal pizza shop that generated some buzz when it opened six years ago has gone out of business. Blaze Pizza at 3714 Vestal Parkway East opened in April 2018. The franchised location was run by NYVA Restaurant Group of Queens. Operator Melvin Quintanilla told WNBF News the pizza shop closed at the end of business on Saturday evening. He said the business had about 20 employees. Quintanilla said the restaurant was shut down because the operation was unsustainable. He said the place was "bleeding money" so the decision was made to close. The Blaze Pizza joint was located on the site of one of Broome County's first McDonald's fast-food restaurants.
Binghamton University Men's Basketball Nonconference Schedule

Binghamton University has just announced the men's non-conference basketball schedule for the 2024-25 season. The Bearcat men will open their season at home in the Events Center, on Wednesday, October 30th with an exhibition game against Queens College. The BU men's team will then travel to State College, Pennsylvania to face the Penn State Nittany Lions on Monday, November 4th. Binghamton's regular season home opener at the Events Center will be on Thursday, November 7th, hosting SUNY Oneonta. Other high-profile non-conference games will include a visit to the University of Miami on Sunday, November 10th, and then at Fordham on Tuesday, November 12.
Rod Serling Statue Erected at Binghamton's Rec Park

Rod Serling - or at least a six-foot-tall likeness of him - is back near his childhood home on the West Side of Binghamton. A statue of the creator of The Twilight Zone television series arrived at Recreation Park with no fanfare on Thursday. A small crew using a crane worked quickly to lift the statue onto a pedestal in the southeast section of the park. The site is just a few blocks away from the Bennett Avenue house where Serling once lived with his family. Workers carefully wrapped the statue, which is to be dedicated in a ceremony later this month. The cost of the long-discussed project was about $140,000. It was commissioned by the Rod Serling Memorial Foundation, which will give the statue to the city of Binghamton.
