Binghamton Knock Downs: Seven More Buildings to Be Demolished

Roving wrecking crews are preparing to remove several structures in a few Binghamton neighborhoods.

Gorick Construction will be paid $186,000 to take down seven blighted buildings on the city's latest hit list of dilapidated sites.

A couple of abandoned homes on Alfred Street on the South Side are among the structures being demolished.

Space cleared by the removal of a house at 4 Alfred Street will result in a slight expansion of a neighboring city park.

This is the second time the Alfred Street Park has increased in size because of a building demolition. Eight years ago, some space was added to the park when a rundown house at 10 Alfred Street was torn down.

Most of the properties that will be cleared in the planned demolitions will be incorporated into the city's "Side Lot Program." They could be purchased by neighbors or they may remain as green space for flood hazard mitigation.

A three-story eight-unit apartment house at 80 Liberty Street was demolished last week.

Other properties where buildings are to be torn down include 21 Andrews Avenue, 11 Duke Street, 74 Evans Street and 192 Henry Street.

In a news release, Mayor Jared Kraham said: "By tearing down these eyesores, we're getting rid of the blighted properties that drag down neighborhoods, attract criminal activity and hurt nearby property values."
