The Broome County Sheriff’s Office is shining a light on one of their own today who helped to locate a missing elderly woman who found herself in a in a serious situation.

On Thursday, January 23, a call was received around 7:05 p.m. regarding an incident in the Town of Binghamton. The caller reported a missing 75-year-old woman who has dementia and was feared to have gone outside in single-digit temperatures. The caller stated that the woman, who had gone to bed at 6:00 p.m., had gone missing by 6:30 p.m., leaving her husband frantic and unable to locate her.

Within minutes of receiving the call, Deputy Scott Pierson of the Broome County Sheriff’s Office was on the scene to assist in the search for the missing woman. Deputy Pierson tracked the woman’s footprints in the snow, leading him into the woods.

After a lengthy search, Deputy Pierson located the missing woman approximately 100 yards - or a quarter-mile - from her home. The woman had fallen in the woods and Deputy Pierson’s quick actions ensured she was found in time and able to receive necessary medical attention.
