Libous Sentencing Day Arrives

Sentencing day is here for former New York State Senator Thomas Libous of Binghamton.

Libous was convicted of a single felony count of lying to the FBI concerning his involvement in getting his son a job with a downstate law firm.

He was to have been sentenced at the end of October, but the date was pushed back as the 62 year old Republican had to undergo another round of chemotherapy for his terminal cancer just before the original sentencing date.

Prosecutors have indicated that, based on Libous’ health, they would look for a sentence of house arrest and a fine.

Libous’ son, Matthew, is currently serving time in federal prison for his conviction on tax fraud charges.

Thomas Libous is a long-time Binghamton politician who rose through the ranks to Deputy Majority Leader of the State Senate before his conviction and removal from office.

Libous maintains he did not use his political influence to convince the Westchester County law firm to hire his son.

There is still a possibility of an appeal of the July verdict.

Doctors have told the court they believed Libous has less than a year to live.
