Lady Justice Restored at Historic Broome County Courthouse
Workers are busy making some repairs atop the dome of the Broome County Courthouse in downtown Binghamton.
KB Services of Binghamton was hired to restore a scale that had fallen from the Lady Justice statue several months ago.
Company owner Bill Svoboda said it was a challenge to secure the needed equipment so his crew could be lifted about 180 feet to the statue.
The 15-foot-tall statue was crafted by an unknown artist and lifted to the top of the courthouse when the structure was built in 1897.
Svoboda said the copper holding the Scale of Justice in place apparently "got thin and just gave way."
A KB Services employee did some restoration work to the scale before it was lifted into place on Tuesday.
Svoboda said in addition to installing the statue, his workers are securing a sword held by Lady Justice and tightening up anything on the dome that may be loose.
There have been other incidents over the last few decades in which parts of the statue have fallen to the ground due to age or weather.
A dish section of the Scale of Justice came plunged to the ground eight years ago. The sword fell from the statue in 1979.
The Broome County Courthouse was designed by noted architect Isaac Perry.
