A 19-year-old woman was critically injured when she was hit by a vehicle in Johnson City.

The incident happened in the area of 226 Baldwin Street around 2:10 p.m. Wednesday.

Johnson City police chief Brent Dodge said the woman who was hurt entered the roadway from in front of a parked car. He said she was taken to Wilson Medical Center, which is about five blocks north of the scene.

Dodge said the woman's injuries are "considered to be severe." Acquaintances of the woman said she appeared to have sustained serious head injuries.

The pedestrian - whose name was not released by police - was struck by a southbound Toyota sport utility vehicle. The woman who had been driving the SUV was shaken but uninjured.

A friend of the pedestrian said she had just given the woman some food she'd picked up from McDonald's. A sandwich wrapper and french fries littered the pavement where the woman fell after being hit by the vehicle.

Dodge said a New York State Police crash reconstruction team was called to the scene to assist in the investigation.

Baldwin Street was closed between Floral Avenue and Grand Avenue following the crash.
