Johnson City Project: What’s the Building Rising Behind Wegmans?
People shopping at the Wegmans store in Johnson City or those driving past the site on Route 17 have been asking questions about a new construction project.
The steel framework for a three-story building has been erected just to the southwest of the Harry L. Drive supermarket.
Although the new structure is rising near Wegmans, the project is not related to the store. The building is on the property of the neighboring U-Haul Moving and Storage facility on Field Street.
Johnson City code enforcement officer Randy Shear said one of the original storage buildings at the site was demolished last fall to make way for a new structure.
Shear said the concrete for the foundation for a large storage building was poured before winter.
Shear said he believes the new facility will be used to store pod-type containers which have grown in popularity in recent years.
Justin Camacho, the manager of the U-Haul storage center, declined to comment on the project. He referred a reporter to Andrew Sciortino, a U-Haul marketing official. He did not return phone calls seeking information about the new building.
The project contractor is T.J. Madison Construction Company of Hillcrest.
