Johnson City to Hire Firefighters With Federal Grant
The Village of Johnson City is going to be able to hire new firefighters with a $923,214 federal grant from the FEMA Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response or “SAFER” Program.
It will take some time to attract recruits and go through training before they are ready to join their local fire departments in early 2022.
U.S. Senators Kirsten Gillibrand and Charles Schumer of New York say a total of $12,316,450 is being split between five fire departments. The funds cover salaries, training and benefits.
The Town of Lagrange near Poughkeepsie is getting over $3.5 million, The City of Albany is getting over $3.3 million. Syracuse is getting a little over $3.2 million and the City of Auburn is being allocated $1,266,480 in SAFER Program grant money.
