The Village of Johnson City Police are joining the ranks of law enforcement in the region recording their activities with body cameras and car computers.

25 new body cameras and 5 new patrol car computers have been added as a result of funding secured from New York State.

State Senator Fred Akshar says it’s important to provide tools needed to the police to increase transparency and to keep taxes low by easing cost burdens on local government.

In a typical day, 12 to 14 officers will use the body cameras with the footage uploaded when the officer returns to the police station.

The $50,000 for the equipment came from a Public Protection Grant in the state budget.
