Johnson City Park to Receive $1.4 Million Makeover
Work on a major improvement project at a Johnson City village park is about to get underway.
Plans call for a series of changes at Workers Park at the corner of Main Street and Lester Avenue. It's located just west of Your Home Public Library.
Johnson City Mayor Martin Meaney said the contractor could start construction at the site sometime in April. The project is expected to take several months to complete.
G. DeVincentis & Son Construction Company of Binghamton will be paid about $1.4 million for the work.
Money from a state Downtown Revitalization Initiative grant will be used to cover the cost of the project.
Meaney said the improvements at the park will be "quite extensive." One of the most noticeable changes will involve moving the century-old Harry L. Johnson statue.
The statue now is in a spot near the library. It will be relocated to a more prominent spot in the park.
A story garden and a new pathway are planned, along with the construction of a staircase to the library. Chess tables also will be installed in the park.
