Jamaican Citizen Sentenced for Lottery Scam
Federal prosecutors say a Jamaican man is headed to prison for preying on citizens in the U.S.A., including in New York State, in a lottery scam.
22 year old Daron Murray has been sentenced to 27 months in prison after pleading guilty to mail fraud and conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud.
Murray admitted working with others to call people telling them they won the lottery but had to send thousands of dollars for taxes and fees in order to collect their prize.
In one case, a 92 year old blind victim in Pittsfield, Massachusetts was scammed into sending $20,000 to one of Murray’s conspirators in Albany, New York.
In addition to the prison time, Murray must serve three years on supervised release and pay $58,400 in restitution.
