New York Counties Where People Would Pay the Most for Sleep
A new study asked over 3,000 adults a simple question: how much would you pay for one perfect night of sleep? The answers showed that many people are so tired, they’d spend real money just to feel rested for one night. In New York, some counties were willing to pay a lot more than others.
The Counties That Would Pay the Most
The people who said they’d pay the most live in Putnam, Suffolk, Westchester, Nassau, and Rockland Counties. In Putnam County, people said they’d pay about $183 for a perfect night’s sleep.
Suffolk wasn’t far behind, followed by Westchester, Nassau, and Rockland. The state average was about $158, which means many people across New York really want better sleep.
The Counties That Would Pay the Least
Some counties didn’t want to spend that much. People in Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Niagara, Allegany, and Chenango Counties said they’d pay the least. In Chautauqua, the average was about $119. These places were all well below the state average, so people there might be getting better sleep or maybe they just aren’t willing to pay for it.
Most People in New York Feel Tired
The survey found that most people in New York don’t feel rested when they wake up. On average, they only feel fully rested about three days a week. That means most mornings, they’re still tired when they get out of bed.
What’s Stopping People From Sleeping?
The main reason people said they can’t sleep is because of anxiety or depression. Others said body pain keeps them awake. Many said they stay up too late looking at their phones or worrying about money. Some said job stress, loud noise, bright lights, or young kids make it hard to sleep. Whatever the reason, a lot of people are struggling.
People Would Trade a Lot for Sleep
The study showed that people are ready to give up important things just to sleep better. Over half said they’d take a pay cut if they could sleep perfectly every night for a year. Almost half said they’d skip their next vacation for just one week of great sleep.

Many said they’ve cried because they were so tired, and some said they can’t remember the last time they felt truly rested for even three days in a row. When asked what’s most important for their health sleep, diet, or exercise most chose sleep.
Who Needs Sleep the Most?
Some people are more tired than others. New moms were the most likely to say they need better sleep. People dealing with anxiety or depression also said they’re very tired. Older adults, workers with long hours, shift workers, teachers, and caregivers also said they don’t get enough rest. All across New York, it’s clear that sleep is something people are missing and many are willing to pay for it.
