What Does A Yellow Dot In The Window Of A Car In New York State Mean?
Recently, I noticed a yellow dot on one of the windows of a passing vehicle. I didn't get a good look at it as I was passing by to read what was on it.
Was it some sort of a bumper/window sticker? I like reading what they say. Many times they reveal a bit of the driver's personality or political stance.
Well, after doing some research on the yellow sticker, I found out it means neither of those categories. It's part of a program in New York State called the Yellow Dot Program.
According to the New York State Sheriff's website, the Yellow Dot program is set up to help first responders provide life-saving medical attention during that first 'golden hour' after a crash or other emergency.
It's a free program. Over two million Yellow Dot kits have been distributed so far in New York State. Once you receive your free Yellow Dot packet, you will find a personal information card and a Yellow Dot decal.
The New York State Sherrif's website says to fill out the information card, place it in your glove compartment along with a recent photo of yourself, and place the yellow dot decal in the driver’s-side rear window of your vehicle. That will tell first responders that you have placed vital medical information in your glove compartment.
This even works for your home. In this case, once you get your Yellow Dot kit, fill out the information card and place the Yellow Dot decal on or beside your front door. Place a completed information card for everyone who lives at that residence, and place them in a clear plastic freezer bag in a visible location in your refrigerator's freezer compartment.
