Some rebranding is in the works for a decommissioned newspaper printing plant and the Johnson City street where it's located.

Binghamton University acquired the site where Gannett built a $50 million production facility on an abandoned brownfield site near the intersection of Airport Road and CFJ Boulevard.

The company printed newspapers at the plant for 12 years before shutting it down in June 2018. About 100 people lost their jobs when the facility was closed.

Binghamton University has used the massive building on Gannett Drive for a speech, language and hearing clinic. It also has been used as a library storage annex.

The school now is preparing to transform the Johnson City site into a lithium-ion battery research facility.

Village Mayor Martin Meaney said a "rebranding and renaming" of the future research complex and the street where it's located are in the works. He said people soon "won't have to refer to it as the Gannett building or Gannett Drive anymore."

Speaking on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, the mayor didn't reveal any specifics. But he said the place is "being transitioned and repurposed into hopefully something that will move us into the future."
