A craft brewing operation that was a fixture on Endicott's Washington Avenue for more than a decade is closing.

The North Brewery has announced plans to end operations. Co-owner Zack Pedley told WNBF News that he and his partners decided "it's just the right time for us."

The business operated in a building that had been occupied for decades by Elk's Bake Shop. The Pedley family acquired the property to launch the craft brewing business in 2012.

The North Brewery's decision to shut down generated an outpouring of online support from customers who expressed disappointment and wished the operators of the business the best.

The partners decided to close The North after "several months of consideration." They said it was an "absolute blast" to make and serve their "creative beers over the last 12 years."

Pedley said the business will close its doors on Saturday evening.

The North Brewery shutdown is coming as an $11 million reconstruction project on Washington Avenue enters its final phase.

Pedley said while "construction didn't help" matters it wasn't the primary reason for the decision to close.

Only two months ago, Pedley expressed concern about the ability of The Avenue's businesses to survive the long street improvement project.

During a July 1 interview on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program, he warned that the situation was dire for people operating restaurants and other businesses along the street.

LOOK: Best Beers From Every State

To find the best beer in each state and Washington D.C., Stacker analyzed January 2020 data from BeerAdvocate, a website that gathers user scores for beer in real-time. BeerAdvocate makes its determinations by compiling consumer ratings for all 50 states and Washington D.C. and applying a weighted rank to each. The weighted rank pulls the beer toward the list's average based on the number of ratings it has and aims to allow lesser-known beers to increase in rank. Only beers with at least 10 rankings to be considered; we took it a step further to only include beers with at least 100 user rankings in our gallery. Keep reading to find out what the best beer is in each of the 50 states and Washington D.C.
