Warming Centers Open As Frigid Temperatures Sweep The Area
Here we go again. As if it's not been cold enough over the past couple of weeks, Mother Nature has decided to crank up the outdoor air-conditioner to even more frigid temperatures, and for a bit of fun, throw in those wind gusts and wind chills, because, well, why not?
According to the National Weather Service, as of midday Thursday, February 5, 2026, from Saturday morning through Sunday afternoon, our portion of the Southern Tier of New York and Northeastern Pennsylvania will be under an Extreme Cold Watch, featuring wind chills in the minus column and wind gusts up to 34 mph. Low temperatures on Saturday will be around minus 3 and zero on Sunday night.
The NWS recommends that if you wander outside, dress in layers, including a hat, face mask, and gloves. Be aware of the warning signs of hypothermia. It can include confusion, intense shivering, difficulty speaking, sleepiness, and stiff muscles.
Also, help prevent water pipes from freezing by wrapping or draining the lines, or allowing them to drip slowly. Reminder: open flames should never be used to thaw pipes. And of course, keep your pets indoors.
