How To Get Real-Time Weather Alerts In New York State

Have you heard of New York State's “Triple Three Triple One?" From the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services, this is a new real-time emergency and weather alert system.

Announced today (May 8, 2025), by New York State Governor Kathy Hochul as part of the State’s Hurricane Preparedness Week recognition efforts, this new service is a text option to receive emergency and weather alerts and updates via mobile phones.

New Yorkers can now text their county of residence to 3-3-3-1-1-1. For those in New York City, simply text the name of your borough with no spaces. The system is not case sensitive. For all of metro New York City, text NewYorkCity.

My highest priority is the safety of New Yorkers, especially during times of severe and unpredictable emergency events. To best prepare for inclement weather, especially as hurricane season approaches, I am encouraging all New Yorkers to sign up for alerts so they can remain safe and vigilant when high-impact events occur. - New York State Governor Kathy Hochul

Governor Hochul's Office also noted that the Empire State has signed Memoranda of Understanding with 51 counties to provide $15 million of flood-related equipment and supplies, including pumps, generators, chain saws, and flood barrier technology.

The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season begins June 1st and runs through November 30th. The preseason forecast from Colorado State University calls for above-average activity in the tropical Atlantic. 17 named storms, nine hurricanes, and four major hurricanes are predicted. NOAA will release its Hurricane outlook later this month (May 2025).

Everyone should learn their risk by considering the threats from tropical storms. Threats include storm surge, flooding from heavy rain, strong winds, tornadoes, and rip currents. All of these threats can occur far from the center of a story, so pay attention to the latest forecasts and be alert for warnings. - National Weather Service
