If you guessed moose, you are correct. Why do I bring up the subject of moose since they are not found in New York State? Well, because they have been found in the Empire State.

According to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, moose sightings are becoming more common, especially in the fall season. Sightings are mostly in the northeastern section of New York.

If you happen to be traveling over the season in this area of New York, be aware that moose are very active, can and will into the state, and frequently enter our roadways, just like any other wild animal.

The NYSDEC notes that moose can be unpredictable and possibly dangerous, especially a cow with calves and rutting bulls, who at times will charge at people, other animals, and even cars.

So, what if you happen to spot a moose nearby? The NYSDEC says to give it plenty of space and observe only from a safe distance. If a shelter is available, use it. When on secondary roads in the north country of New York State this fall, be on the lookout for moose, same as you would for deer in our neck of the woods.
