If you have ever driven a motor vehicle, odds are you have encountered aggressive drivers at least once (probably many times) during your travels.

I witness it every day, especially on my way home on that stretch of the Vestal Parkway between Washington Avenue on the Southside of Binghamton and the western end of Vestal Avenue, and at times on Route 201, both north and south directions between Vestal and Johnson City.

Aggressive driving can lead to road rage, and as humans, it's not always easy to avoid the situation and sometimes become a participant in this illegal and dangerous act.

According to the website The Zebra, in 2024, 96% witnessed an act of road rage over a six-month period. A total of 12,610 injuries and 218 murders have been attributed to road rage over seven years in the United States, according to the website SafeMotorist, and 66% of traffic fatalities are caused by aggressive driving, according to the National Highway Safety Administration.

This week, the Johnson City Police Department touched on aggressive driving and road rage, pointing to an incident that occurred this week.

The incident on Monday, January 5, 2025, according to the JCPD, led to a serious crash on Route 201 North, resulting in that section of the roadway being shut down, causing major traffic delays for area motorists.

In the social media post from the Johnson City Police Department, an in-car video, recorded from one of the vehicles involved, showed the dangerous behavior from the motorists of both vehicles, as the situation escalated.
The speed indicator showed just how fast and unsafe it became. Speeds can be viewed as reaching as high as 81 mph in a 45 mph speed zone.
While this crash could have been worse, JCPD noted that only minor injuries were reported. The motorist of a Nissan SUV was issued numerous traffic tickets and charged with reckless driving, a misdemeanor offense, and the driver of the BMW, which captured the incident, was ticketed for speeding. You can view the incident below.
Johnson City Police remind motorists that road rage is a chain reaction; one moment of anger can change everything. Slow down... back off...and let it go.  It's never worth a life.
