Area law enforcement officials say they have collected hundreds of pounds of drugs for disposal following the April 27 National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

Broome County Sheriff David Harder says around 700 pounds of unwanted and expired medications were collected, some of those items: opioid drugs with the potential of falling into the wrong hands.

The drugs are collected periodically for safe disposal, which also protects in environment.

Several police stations and other locations also have collection boxes where medications can be dropped off year-round.
