Just when you think you are getting ahead in life financially, something kicks you in the you-know-what. I can't count the times that has happened to me.

For example, your refrigerator isn't cooling as well as it had been, and it's getting to the point where it's not going to properly keep your foods cold or frozen. Or maybe that old stove finally cooked its last meal, or your washing machine has ceased to spin. Maybe your air conditioner isn't cooling down your home like it used to.

You get the idea. It's going to cost you to have your appliance repaired or worse, replaced. Well, if you live in Tioga County, New York, and you are having issues with an appliance that is about to cease working, you may be able to apply for assistance.

Tioga Opportunities Inc. has announced a Home Appliance Loan Program for residents of the county. The program is a low-interest loan for families or individuals who are in need of a major appliance. That includes washers and dryers, refrigerators, freezer stoves, and air conditioners, although, for air conditioners, there is a requirement of medical documentation.

The Home Appliance Loan Program from Tioga Opportunities offers individuals and families a way to "gain a reliable asset and build good credit while avoiding predatory loans and lenders."

Applicants will need to provide proof of documentation including income, and eligibility will be based on the ability to make payments on time. Those will poor credit are encouraged to apply. For individuals and families who are approved, the Home Appliance Loan Program will purchase the appliance from a local vendor, and that vendor will deliver and install the approved appliance in the home of the individual or family.
